Pompeii archaeological site

Pompeii is a "not-to-be-missed" attraction for those visiting Campania. It is the largest and best preserved archaeological site in Italy and the most visited in the world. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, described by Pliny the Elder, completely buried this important Roman trading town preserving it in excellent conditions, only to be initially rediscovered in 1748.
Visiting Pompeii grants you an incredible journey into the public and private life of 2000 years ago.

The main attractions include:

• The beautiful Roman Villas, homes of the patricians, where you can see the structure of the ancient Roman houses and admire the beautiful frescoes, in particular, the Villa of the Mysteries, the Villa of Diomedes, the Villa of the Mosaic Columns.
• The majestic Forum (with the temples of Jupiter and Apollo), the main square, centre of the religious, political and commercial life of the city.
• The intact amphitheatre, the oldest of the Roman world, where gladiators fought for the entertainment of the aristocracy.
• The baths, the Lupanar (brothel), the theatres and various Temples are just as impressive.

Pompeii can be easily reached from the Grand Hotel Moon Valley by taking the local train. The station is a 10 minute walk from the hotel, with frequent trains which take 30 minutes to get to the ruins. The Hotel provides half-day group tours with a foreign language speaking guide.

The Concierge's advice: A guide (private or for groups) is essential to fully understand the beauty and legends of Pompeii. A half day is sufficient for this excursion. If you are particularly interested in archeology you can combine a visit to Herculaneum on the same day.
In the Pompeii area it is also worth mentioning the least known Ruins of Oplontis.
